An alumnus of the prestigious IIT – Roorkee, Dr Hemant Darbari is one of the founding members of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an R&D institute set up by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India for carrying out advanced research in new and emerging technological domains. Currently as the Director General, C-DAC he is responsible for overall management of C-DAC and lead a pool of highly specialized scientific, R&D, Technical and Administrative Personnel with his broad scientific, R&D and technological vision. Sir is primarily associated with Building capacity and capability for the National Supercomputing Mission and driving the R&D roadmap in the multi-specialty domains of Multilingual Computing, Software Technologies, Health Informatics, Disaster management, e-Governance and Education & Training. Dr. Darbari derives his interest in a wide range of subjects that includes Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine assisted Translation (MT), Information Extraction and Information Retrieval (IE/IR), Intelligent Language Tutoring systems, Speech Technology, Decision Support System and Simulations, High Performance Computing and Security and is the Principal/ Chief Investigator of several projects of national importance like MANTRA (Machine assisted Translation Tool), LILA (Learn Indian Languages through Artificial intelligence), Shrutlekhan (A Hindi Speech to Text System), Shruti-Drishti (Web Browsing through Listening for Visually Impaired), to name a few, funded from the Ministry of Home Affairs (Department of Official Language), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (Department of Electronics & Information Technology), Ministry of Defense, and the Rajya Sabha Secretariat. His academic stints include "Visiting Research Fellowship as Adjunct Professor" from IRCS, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, in 1997 and "UNDP Fellowship as Visiting Professor" in 1989 & 1990 at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA and Institute of Furtwangan, Freiburg, Germany.
He has to his credit, more than 85 Technical Papers that have been published in national & international Journals & Conference Proceedings and authored technical book chapters. He is also guiding several Ph.D students at the Banasthali University and North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon. He is Member in the Panel for preparing the Indian standard on “Speech corpora for development of Text to Speech in Indian Language”, Bureau of Standards(BIS), Member of the Computer Society of India [CSI], Founder Member of NLP Association of India [NLPAI], Member European Association for Machine Translation [EAMT], Member Secretary of Town Official Language Implementation Committee [TOLIC], Pune, Academic and Advisory Council Member in ADVISORY COUNCIL at Vel Tech Dr.RR & Dr.SR Technical University, Expert Member of High Level Forum for 5G India 2020 and Member of Committee on Leveraging AI for identifying National Mission in Key Sectors constituted by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), GoI. Dr. Darbari is a recipient of the prestigious "Computerworld Smithsonian Award Medal" from the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC for his outstanding work on MANTRA which is also a part of "The 1999 Innovation Collection" at the National Museum of American History, Washington DC, USA.
Dr. Darbari was felicitated for his outstanding work in the area of Machine Translation, Speech
Technologies and Hindi Language proliferation on the occasion of Hindi Parv-2014 by the Chief
Minister of Madhya Pradesh Hon’ble Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He received the prestigious VASVIK Award for his contributions to the advancement of Information and Communication Technologies. Dr. Darbari has been conferred with an Award of Excellence in Corporate Leadership in the IIPS-2015, organized by Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune. Dr Darbari received “विश्ि ह िंदी सम्मान (Vishwa Hindi Samman)” at the hands of Honorable
Minster for External Affairs Government of India, Smt. Sushma Swaraj for contribution of CDAC in the field of Hindi Language Computing, Research and Development, proliferation and
various deployments at national and international level during 11th WHC, on 20th August, 2018.
